Anonymize a Word document in your browser
Anonymize any document before it reaches an AI. Nothing leaves your device. Your DOCX comes back as a DOCX: same styles, same headers and footers, same tables, only the names and numbers change.

What stays intact
What we preserve in Word files
The file is edited in place: only the detected text changes. Everything else is written back byte for byte where possible.
Paragraph and character styles
Headings, lists, bold and italic runs keep their formatting. Replacements are written into the existing runs.
Headers and footers
Text in headers, footers and page numbering areas is scanned and replaced like body text.
Footnotes and endnotes
Note text is included in detection; note references and numbering are untouched.
Comments
Comment text is anonymized. Author names inside comment metadata are also replaced.
Tables
Cells are treated as text units; column widths, borders and merged cells stay as they are.
Images and embedded objects
Pictures, charts and embedded files are copied unchanged. Text inside images is not read.
Tracked changes
Text in insertions and deletions is scanned too, so a name in a rejected edit does not slip through.
What gets detected
Names, numbers and identifiers: three layers
Patterns with checksums (IBAN, national IDs, card numbers, emails, phones, URLs, IPs, dates, plates), your own dictionary of names and terms, and an optional model that runs in your browser for person, company and place names.
- Person names
- Companies and brands
- Places and addresses
- Emails and phone numbers
- National IDs, tax IDs, passports
- IBANs and card numbers
- URLs and IP addresses
- Dates and license plates
Questions
Word questions, answered
Will my Word formatting break?
No. The document is opened as a ZIP of XML parts and only text nodes are edited. Styles, numbering, sections and page setup are written back unchanged.
Are headers, footers and footnotes included?
Yes. Body, headers, footers, footnotes, endnotes, comments and text boxes are all scanned. Text inside images is not, because images are not read.
What about tracked changes and comments?
Inserted and deleted text in tracked changes is scanned. Comment text and comment author names are replaced as well. Accept or reject changes first if you want a clean file.
Does the same person get the same label everywhere?
Yes. Every occurrence of a value, including case and inflection variants that are merged into the same entity, gets the same replacement, for example Person 1. The mapping table lists each pair.
Can I use .doc files from older Word versions?
Not directly. Open the file in Word or LibreOffice, save it as .docx and drop it in. Legacy binary .doc files are not parsed.
Is the file uploaded anywhere?
No. Parsing, detection and rewriting run in your browser. You can switch Wi‑Fi off after the page loads and everything still works.
